League rules
RulesThe playing rules of the Ellesmere Port Snooker League, updated from the rules agreed at the 2017 AGM.
Adopted Monday 19 October 2026.
Section 1General
- 1.1
All frames are played to the current WPBSA Rules of Snooker, except where these rules say otherwise.
- 1.2
The miss rule is not played.
- 1.3
Match formats are decided by the committee.
Section 2The league
- 2.1
The League runs a Winter League and a Summer League each year.
- 2.2
Every team plays every other team at least once at home and once away. The committee draws the fixtures, and they are published on the website.
- 2.3
League matches are played on Thursday nights.
- 2.4
A match is six frames: four singles followed by two doubles.
- 2.5
A team scores one point for each frame it wins. A match can be drawn 3-3.
- 2.6
Teams level on points are separated by frame difference, then by frames won.
Section 3Match night
- 3.1
Matches start at 7.30pm, or 7.00pm at clubs with one table.
- 3.2
If the opposing team is more than 15 minutes late, one frame may be claimed. If more than 30 minutes late, a second frame may be claimed.
- 3.3
The visiting captain nominates the first player. At a neutral venue the captains toss a coin for home advantage.
- 3.4
A team may play with as few as three players. A match must not be cancelled because a team has fewer players than the format needs.
- 3.5
Ideally both teams have all their players there at the start. At least three players must be present when the match starts.
Section 4Scorecards and results
- 4.1
The result is entered on the League's online scorecard, under Scorecard on the website, on the night of the match.
- 4.2
The home captain enters the scorecard, or asks a team-mate to.
- 4.3
Each frame records the players and both scores. Breaks may be recorded too.
- 4.4
Once sent, the result goes straight onto the website, and the table and handicaps update. A captain who finds a mistake tells the Secretary, who will correct it.
- 4.5
A result not entered within three days of the match may be treated as void.
Section 5Rearranging matches
- 5.1
League matches are played on the date in the fixture list unless the committee has been given one week's notice, or in exceptional circumstances.
- 5.2
Cup matches are played on the date set unless both sides agree another date and time, and the captains tell the League officers.
- 5.3
A cup match not played before the next round is due is forfeited by the side that asked to move it, unless the circumstances are exceptional and a League officer has been told.
Section 6Registration and transfers
- 6.1
Only players registered with the League may play in any League match or competition. Players are registered to a team, not a club.
- 6.2
Players may be registered at any time during the season and can play as soon as they are registered, except that no new registrations are accepted once only four league matches remain.
- 6.3
A team may have no more than 15 registered players.
- 6.4
A player may move to another team after telling the Secretary. No transfers are allowed once only four league matches remain.
- 6.5
A player may play for only one team in a season, unless the Secretary has agreed a transfer.
Section 7Handicaps
- 7.1
Every player has a handicap, set by the Handicap Administrator. The committee may review any handicap.
- 7.2
The upper limit is +25. There is no lower limit.
- 7.3
The most start a player can receive in a frame is 45 points.
- 7.4
A player's handicap changes after every league singles they play: down 3 for a win and up 3 for a loss. (Agreed at the AGM of 8 October 2026.)
- 7.5
Only league singles change handicaps. Doubles and cup matches do not, but are played off the handicaps players have on the night.
- 7.6
In doubles, the two partners' handicaps are added together and halved. Positive numbers round up and negative numbers round down.
- 7.7
A new player's captain assesses them and suggests a starting handicap. The committee then reviews it and approves it, or sets a different one, before the player's first match.
- 7.8
Every player's current handicap is shown on the website.
Section 8Competitions
- 8.1
All teams are entered in the team knockout cups, which are played off handicaps. A team cup match drawn 3-3 is won by the team with the higher aggregate score.
- 8.2
The League runs individual competitions, both handicapped and scratch, and a handicap doubles, when enough players enter. Entry is £3 per competition.
- 8.3
Finals are played at a neutral venue on a date set by the committee. In team finals the captains toss for first choice of players. A player who cannot attend a final forfeits it, unless the circumstances are exceptional and a committee member has been told.
- 8.4
Unless a competition's own rules say otherwise, the League rules apply. The format a competition starts with is used throughout, including the final.
- 8.5
The format of each competition is set out in the competitions guide.
Section 9Conduct
- 9.1
Every player and supporter is subject to the rules of the club they are visiting.
- 9.2
Players are expected to behave with respect towards opponents, team-mates, referees and club members, as set out in the code of conduct.
- 9.3
Offensive posts about a player or team on social media or in the League's groups will be removed and raised with the committee, which may take action from a warning up to expulsion from the League.
- 9.4
Complaints are dealt with as set out in the constitution.
Section 10Penalties
- 10.1
A team that plays an unregistered player loses the frames that player won.
- 10.2
A team that fails to fulfil a fixture without notice may have points deducted.
- 10.3
The committee may reduce a penalty, or set one where none is stated.
If in doubt, ask the secretary.
